On January 28, Finley FFA members traveled to the Tri-City Convention Center to compete in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking competition at the Washington State Potato Conference. This event gave members the opportunity to test their communication skills while learning more about one of Washington’s most important agricultural industries. Members drew speaking topics focused on current issues in the potato industry, ranging from labor challenges to sustainability and future innovations.

After drawing their topics, competitors were given 30 minutes to prepare a speech before presenting to a panel of judges. Finley FFA members represented their chapter well, with
Soren Miles earning 6th place,
Ava Teagle placing 8th, and
Trell Miles finishing 10th against strong competition from both Washington and Oregon States. The experience helped members practice thinking on their feet, organizing ideas quickly, and confidently sharing their thoughts in a professional setting.

In addition to the competition, members explored various industry booths throughout the convention. While visiting exhibits, Finley FFA members interacted with industry representatives and learned more about careers, technology, and advancements within the potato industry. Overall, attending the Washington State Potato Conference was a valuable experience that allowed students to grow as speakers, learn about real-world agricultural issues, and make meaningful connections within the agriculture community.
