On January 6th, RVHS students had the opportunity to hear from a River View graduate regarding drug, vaping, and alcohol prevention and safety. FBI Task Force Officer and RVHS graduate, Abel Suarez, spoke to students about what led him into his current line of work, along with the impact illegal substances can have on students’ lives both inside and outside school.

Principal Davis and Athletic Director Ryan Helms kicked off Friday’s presentation with a discussion of the importance of maintaining a safe and drug-free school. Mr. Helms reminded students of the drug and alcohol provisions of the school’s athletic code and the consequences of use on a student’s ability to participate in sports or other activities. Officer Suarez shared facts about both legal and health effects of drugs, alcohol, and vaping use. Lastly, RVHS Counselor Rebekah Duty provided information and resources available for those struggling with addiction.
Finley School District and RVHS are incredibly grateful for Officer Suarez’s time and service to our community. Students, families, and community members are encouraged to access prevention and support resources such as Teen Link (available at
www.teenlink.org/resources/#SubstanceUsePrevention or 1.8666.TEENLINK). Additionally, an anonymous reporting link is available on the Finley School District website for any student or family member to use 24/7. The link can be access on the home page of the district website at www.finleysd.org (Look for the “
Report a Safety Concern” under the interactive map. That link can also be found on the main navigation menu under Community > Anonymous Reporting.
